(On the occasion of Universal Children’s Day and 30th Anniversary of the ratification of UNCRC)
The Universal Children’s Day is marked around the world including Pakistan with activities focused on promotion and protection of children’s rights. This special day reminds the state to work for improving the condition of children. Today we pledge to ensure that children will have their rights to survive, participate and develop in an environment free from exploitation, abuse and neglect.
It is heartening to note that Pakistan is celebrating its 30th anniversary of the ratification of UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). As a signatory to the UNCRC, Pakistan has made earnest efforts to safeguard the rights of children at various fora. Nationally, Pakistan has taken practical steps to ensure the safety of her Children.
The establishment of National Commission on the Rights of Child (NCRC) by the Government of Pakistan is a right step towards promoting and strengthening the agenda of Child Rights in Pakistan. The enactment of Zainab Alert, Response and Recovery Act, 2020, Juvenile Justice System Act, 2018 and ICT Child Protection Act, 2018 would go a long way in protecting our children from exploitation and abuse.
Today we renew our resolve to protect the rights of children and provide them equal opportunities to reach their full potential and bright future. I call upon the civil society, media, caregivers, teachers, national and international development partners and the children themselves to play an active role towards raising awareness and promoting the rights of children.
May Allah help us in this noble cause. Ameen!
